Record Your Music

LEARN TO RECORD YOUR OWN WORSHIP SONGS FOR MIXING AND MASTERING

Learn How We Recorded The Song Psalm 77

Samuel Torres

In this course you will be with Sam Torres and I as we record the instruments for his song, Psalm 77.

We started from the very beginning with only a MIDI piano part, and worked through recording everything from stereo mic’ing a baby grand piano, to mic’ing up a full drum set in the sanctuary of the church.

In this course you will watch as I teach Sam everything he needs to know to be able to record his own songs all by himself, using moderate gear we already have in our church. In this course we cover:

  • Setting up the audio hardware
  • Microphone positioning and phase coherence
  • Things to watch out for when recording
  • How to set up a DAW session for recording

Producing

When you have a song idea, you write enough to be able to play it for your family and friends. You might even get your friends involved and add instrumentation. You may even have it done enough to play it for your church.

Producing a song for a recording is the process by which you take the song you have written and put in all of the finishing touches. This means looking at the arrangement to make sure there aren’t any conflicting instruments in each section, adding any instrumentation to achieve the right textures and maximize the emotional impact of your music. This is where you’ll develop any programmed synth and texture parts, as well as coordinate musicians and coach them through developing their parts and recording performance.

This Producing course will cover all of these things and more. You will learn how to take your basic song idea and turn it into a fully-produced, high-quality song ready to record and mix.

Recording

After you’ve developed your song to its full potential, the next step is to capture it all in a recording. Recording is the part of the process where you will put microphones on your various instruments and capture the the musical performance.

The recording process is often seen as shrouded in mystery regarding what equipment is needed to properly a song: the type of computer and software needed, how to get your microphones plugged into your computer, proper microphone placement. The good news is that your church likely already has most of the equipment necessary so you can get started at a minimal cost.

In the Recording course you will learn the principles on how to effectively place microphones on any instrument, as well tips and tricks for various instruments including the piano, guitar, and drums, and vocals. You will also learn how to set up your recording hardware on your computer, how to set up your software for a recording session, and principles of routing audio through various systems.

Mixing and Mastering

After you’ve gotten all of your tracks recorded, it’s time to mix them.

Mixing is the process where we take all of our recorded tracks and and make them all fit together in a way that’s cohesive and pleasing. There are many goals we may shoot for such as hearing every instrument in a section or trying to focus on one or two, but whichever goals we are aiming for, the ultimate goal is to maximize the emotional impact of the song.

Mastering is where we take our mix and give it some polish as well as making it loud enough for commercial standards. Mastering also involves taking several different mixed tracks and making them fit together as a cohesive “set” of songs for release as an album.

In the Mixing and Mastering course you will learn all of the core principles, tips, and tricks that I’ve learned over the last twenty years of making recorded music including session setup, working with templates, compression, equalization, and much more.
